Today marks World Water Day (22 March) and this year’s theme focuses on Nature for Water and on exploring how we can use nature to overcome the water challenges of the 21st century.
At CLS, we have been providing water testing to clients since we first set up in 1994 and we have seen a noted change in water quality since – here our Director of Environmental Services, Cäcilia Terloh provides insights into the evolution of water testing in Ireland in our pursuit of purity:

Water testing was one of the very first activities undertaken by CLS when the company was founded in 1994. Since then, the environment department has been providing laboratory services for all water testing requirements – including physical and chemical parameters as well as bacteriological analysis – for clients both at home and abroad.
Game-changer – winning the Water Framework Directive (WFD)
In 2006, CLS submitted a joint tender with a German partner IWW Institut für Wirtschaftspublizistik for the first national surface water monitoring project under the WFD – it was successful, and we delivered a comprehensive programme from 2007 to 2009 on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and our project partner with up to 350 monitoring points per month. That was a game-changing milestone for Ireland, and for us, in terms of sample management, especially as it followed on from a large scale analytical project that we carried out for the Corrib Site Terminal from 2005.
InterTrade Ireland Innovation Award
In 2016, we were awarded the Project Exemplar of Innovation Award from InterTrade Ireland for a novel single-injection total petroleum hydrocarbon test method. This allows for more accurate & INAB accredited determination of mineral oils and TPH (aliphatic/aromatic split) in water and soil. We are the only laboratory in Ireland to offer this service by GCGC-FID technology.
